Windows 10 Home vs Pro vs. S Mode

That's what Microsoft means by better performance over time. It's a version of Windows that continues to run just like new, forever. Windows 10 S is Microsoft’s answer to the success of Google’s Chromebooks in the education sector. Chromebooks are affordable laptops that run Google’s Chrome OS, which is an operating system built around the search company’s Chrome browser and is limited to web apps and some Android apps. A big upgrade in Windows 10 Home are the security features. Home is the standard version of Windows 10, the baseline package designed for the general user primarily accessing Windows at home.

How to Check If You’re Using S Mode

They have virtualized the registry for centenial apps. Essentially they have a fake registry that the app writes to that is enclosed in its own sandbox along with the app away from the real registry. Oddly enough this appears to be the way they made the Android and iOS versions of Office too.

If you are a regular consumer, and for most PCs, they will ship with Home S Mode by default is my prediction. So yes, it WILL be the default for what most people see. The regular consumer who only browses websites or downloads the odd title from the Store, will never need to 'upgrade'/remove the S. For anyone playing games or doing anything more creative, they'll remove S and install their Win32 apps as soon as they get told they can't, and this'll be for free. MS is banking on fewer people doing this then run Home wide open today, and thus, it'll be more secure for some % of the ecosystem.

S Mode Is Optional

They all do the basics well, although we do find Microsoft Office to be much better for professional use. For quick and easy documents and spreadsheets, though, Drive is very good and would prove adequate for most students. You’ll also be able to use online office software, including Microsoft Office Online. For example, if you use Spotify you’ll have to use a version of the web player, which isn’t particularly great and doesn’t hook into your Chromebook’s media playback buttons.

We could start seeing the same sort of thing with apps from the store -- again time will tell. The idea is Windows 10 S won't slow down after 6-12 months of use. You could make the argument that a Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro machine does, in fact, slow down over time, due to installing and uninstalling lots of apps and games. Some of those programs may add themselves to your startup folder, slowing down login times.

Windows 10 vs. Windows 10 S: What's the difference?

In this case Microsoft is skewing the OEMs towards Windows 10 S Home. Expect the amount of S Mode PCs to dramatically increase. So in the future I expect there to be only 3 mainstream SKUs that OEMs will mainly use. Besides their laptop, how many Windows S devices were actually released?

To find the real difference between Windows S-mode and Windows, you'll have to dig a bit deeper than the UI. There are a lot of Windows apps that won't work in S-mode, including some of the more popular ones like Steam, Adobe Photoshop, and Google Chrome. The other thing Chromebooks are designed around is a good internet connection. Chromebooks were meant to take advantage of cloud computing services like Google Docs, Sheets, and Stadia, rather than locally installed software.

I think what S adds is that the setting that is switchable in non-S mode can't be switched off. In non-S mode, accidently running a rogue app could allow that app to do anything a user could do, including switching off that store-only setting and whatever else. In S mode, that rogue wouldn't be able to run in the first place, because only Microsoft-approved apps can run.

Despite some of these user limitations, most users will not feel too restricted, as there are a wide variety and large number of apps available through Microsoft Store. Furthermore, the limit on applications helps Windows 10 in S mode deliver higher speeds, resulting in reduced startup time; it also results in better battery life and overall performance for user devices. Windows 10 in S mode is a version of the Windows 10 operating system that is optimized for performance and security.

Does Windows 10 S really have better performance than Windows 10 Pro? Microsoft is looking to tap into the education market with Windows 10 S. Once upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, it is not possible to revert back to Windows 10 S.

I would have put my parents, granmother and brother on it faster than you can say install. I must admit, I thought Ms would have gone back that way with Windows 10 since they want people inside their eco system, but they have not, but that could change. Great for ppl who want an oversized windows phone. If yes, it's still a good OS to support to prevent any OS attacks because it needs certification. Anyone who's not crazy should buy it from MS, and pretty much anyone who cares about having Windows 10 upgraded it when it was free.
